Thailand Distance Learning Center

gdlnThe Global Development Learning Network (GDLN) is a worldwide partnership of Distance Learning Centers (DLCs). Its unique facilities offer the opportunity for on-time and cost-effective information exchange, knowledge sharing, coordination, consultation, training,  and dialogues to organizations, groups, teams and individuals that work to contribute to sustainable development and the reduction of poverty in the developing world.

Through Distance Learning Centers (DLCs) affiliated with GDLN it is possible to bring together development practitioners and experts at an unprecedented level - to share their experiences and learn from each other as they design and implement ambitious reform and change programs in developing countries. By eliminating the need for experts and practitioners to travel, training or other forms of knowledge exchange do not need to be delivered in a concentrated period of time. This gives more time and flexibility for participants to read more background material; prepare real, rather than simulated assignments related to their actual work; and to learn with their own (local) colleagues as a team.

The GDLN is a telecommunications network that connects distance learning centers (DLC)
in cities across the globe. A DLC includes high-speed access to the Internet and a fully equipped multimedia learning room with 30 or more computer workstations. The videoconferencing service can be used for one and two way visual connections. Each center will provide and manage its space, infrastructure and a program of courses and seminars. This includes local marketing and promotion of the learning program and provision of administrative support such as participant registration and follow-up.

GDLN partners are on the leading-edge of just-in-time knowledge sharing and development. In 1997, the World Bank launched a learning network linking its regional offices in more than 75 countries worldwide. Through this network, the Bank and its partners brought together development stakeholders to participate in a variety of courses and seminars. Demand for these services blossomed. GDLN, now comprises a growing number of independent DLCs, creating a global web of learning institutions.

GDLN members—including governments; international, civil society and private sector
organizations; academia and research institutions—joined together in the creation of GDLN and its knowledge sharing capacity in support of sustainable development. Specifically, GDLN:

  • Provides decision-makers and agents of change with access to partners near and far who face similar challenges in other parts of the world.
  • Enables people to learn in their home environments minimizing costly travel and work
    disruptions.
  • Bridges the knowledge gap worldwide—GDLN captures expertise in a wide variety of
disciplines and connects knowledge centers around the world, allowing leading practitioners
to share cutting-edge knowledge in real time.

Thailand GDLN was established in 2000 and is located in Bangkok at the Chulalongkorn University (CU).
